Elements-2456

Modern residential design in North America has been evolving since the early 1950s. The Case Study houses built in Southern California were bold, industrial, and efficient. After the WWII era of rationing, refrigerator factory closings to make war goods, and other forms of “doing without,” the period following two major overseas wars was one of cautious optimism but not a time for conspicuous consumption. The Case Study houses were strikingly bold, featured the use of industrial looking components. At the same time they were resource efficient in their lack of superfluous trim or ornamentation.

During the same exact period, the rural cousins to the LA Case Study houses were born. They were bold, free of ornamentation, and utilized a wooden post and beam system, in much the same way that the Case Study houses utilized steel, to create generous open multi-functional living spaces. And like their urban counterparts, they featured expansive walls of glass that had not been used in houses before then.  These houses were Lindal homes.

Modernism is a response to the environment – the societal environment, the political environment ands the natural environment. As such, modern design, including Lindals, has evolved over seven decades. In 2011, for example, one cannot be modern without being green. Green is today’s model of efficiency and responsibility.

The Lindal Elements collection is a modern version of the traditional Lindal building system.  Lindal Elements homes offer:

  • Predictability (Cost, size, appearance, timeline, etc)

  • Control of the design process (and in many cases designing themselves)

  • Speed  over developing a deep understanding of the design through a more iterative process. They have many other life pursuits that they take priority over this project.

  • Good site-responsive design, at an affordable price

  • Streamlined, efficient process,

  • Professional design at an affordable price.

What are the Essential “Elements” of the Elements Houses?

  • Communal elements (5 x 5 bays)

  • Personal elements (3x 3 and 4 x 4 bays)

  • Utility elements (2 x 2 bays)

  • Private (pop-out) elements (1 x 2 and 1 x3 bays)

  • Flat or 3:12 roof pitches

  • Roof extensions continuous from an adjoining element (for covered porches and deeper overhangs)

  • Decks
